The Intersection of Values and Pericles

I came across this beautiful quote from Pericles the other day that says,

What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.

My values, which are the north stars that guide the decisions and choices I make, felt validated, yet again. It took me years of "feeling" what my values were, to get to the place where I could articulate these five values. And this quote gives me another opportunity to reflect on how I live them, but also infuse them into the life I live and the work I do, every day.

  • Adventure: As I explore the world with curiosity, I'm not merely collecting monuments or souvenirs. Instead, it's about the experiences, the stories, and the moments collectively shared.

  • Curiosity: My curiosity fuels a desire to understand and connect with diverse cultures and people. What I leave behind isn't just footprints in different places; it's the open-mindedness, the questions asked, and the genuine interest in learning from others.

  • Dependability: My reliability and consistency in relationships create lasting impacts. What I strive for is to build the trust, the support, and the assurance that others can rely on.

  • Excellence: Striving for excellence isn't just about personal achievements; it's about setting a standard in how I interact and engage with others. My pursuit of excellence leaves behind a legacy of high standards, encouragement for others to achieve their best, and a commitment to quality in every interaction and endeavor.

  • Kindness: Above all, kindness. Kindness leaves an indelible mark on others. It's not the grand gestures but the small acts of kindness, empathy, and understanding that become part of others' lives.

Now the question becomes about you. What are your Personal Values and how do they align with the quote by Pericles? There are a wealth of resources on the internet that can help guide you in choosing your own values. One of my favorites is from Brene Brown.

When you identify your values, share them, I'd love to hear from you!
