5 Sparks to Fuel Your Week: Potential

Welcome to 5 Sparks to Fuel Your Week—my new blog format designed to ignite your thinking and inspire action. Every week, I’ll be sharing five powerful “Sparks” to help you grow personally, professionally, and as a leader. Whether you’re looking to sharpen your leadership skills, strengthen your team, or unlock new potential in your life, these sparks will serve as quick yet impactful reflections to guide your journey.

Spark #1 - Quote of the Week

Surround yourself with people who see your potential and encourage you to step into it. - Rebecca Baybayan

Spark #2 - Thought for the Week

Have you ever noticed how the great leaders in our lives have a way of seeing something that we can’t yet see in ourselves?

They inspire us, not because they have all the answers, but because they recognize our potential and encourage us to lean in. They create the culture where growth and confidence coexist.

These remarkable leaders are mirrors and anchors, mirrors because they reflect back the strengths we may overlook, and anchors, because they are there when we take a risk that doesn't go as planned, and help build us back up.

I was thinking the other day about those leaders in my life who have done just that and penned this statement that perfectly sums up my sentiment.

Surround yourself with people who see your potential and encourage you to step into it.

Who was that person for you? A mentor, coach, manager, or even a peer and how did they help you step into your potential?

Spark #3 - Leadership Resource Spotlight

One of my favorite books is the Leadership Resource Spotlight this week:"Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter" by Liz Wiseman. The book explores how great leaders amplify the intelligence and potential of those around them by creating an environment that inspires growth, curiosity, and contribution.

Wiseman introduces the concept of being a "Multiplier" versus a "Diminisher." Leaders can get better at encouraging potential by:

  • Asking insightful questions that challenge and expand thinking.

  • Creating space for others to take ownership and shine in their roles.

  • Providing consistent, constructive feedback that inspires improvement rather than discouragement.

  • Recognizing and celebrating small wins to build confidence.

By intentionally focusing on these practices, leaders can foster a culture where their teams feel supported and empowered to step into their fullest potential.

Spark #4 - Wanderlust Wisdom

Travel naturally encourages us to surround ourselves with people who expand our horizons and help us grow. Whether it’s a guide offering wisdom on a mountain trek or a local sharing stories over coffee, these moments remind us of our potential to see the world—and ourselves—differently. Much like great leaders, the people we meet while traveling often inspire us to step outside our comfort zones and embrace new possibilities.

Spark #5 - Take Action

Journal Prompt:

  • Who in my life has helped me recognize my potential, and how can I express gratitude for their impact?

  • What’s one step I can take this week to help someone else step into their potential?
